African Adventure

E Rogers - Lincs

I was diagnosed in October 1998 with mainly Ocular Myasthenia, and in May 1999 had a Thymectomy. I am in my early 50's but felt that was the beginning of the rest of my life; my pyridostigmine and steroids have been reduced, with the hope of coming off them altogether.

The reason for this letter is I have just returned from a cruise to Africa, where I went on a safari - walked around many ruins in Egypt, and eventually learnt to cope with the heat which forced me to have a few days extra resting. Even the seasickness was conquered with the aid of accu-pressure wrist bands. I could not have any preventive vaccines for yellow fever, cholera etc, or malaria tablets, but I was careful - took my own bottle of water, wet wipes, insect spray whenever I set foot on dry land and, of course, all my tablets.

I could not believe it was really me participating and seeing all those sights, after how I had previously felt, and what I had been through. So for all those newly diagnosed, we don't feel it at the time, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. I was brought through mine by a very patient partner and two very understanding Doctors. My consultant Mr Ahmed of the Hull Royal Infirmary, and my GP Dr Purser, whose encouragement gave me the courage to take up the opportunity to travel to Africa.
