The Walton Centre - A Patient’s Perspective

Janine Telfer

The Walton Centre is a recognised centre of excellence for neurology and neurosurgery and I wondered what I would find on my first visit. My husband parked the car in a space just 50 yds from the main entrance, which seemed like an auspicious beginning. We walked into a modern, light and airy hospital, were greeted with a smile and shown to the calm, relaxed waiting area. I had a long and detailed consultation and a full range of tests was scheduled, not to disprove my 26-yearold diagnosis but to provide up to date information on which to base a treatment plan. I was pleased to find that all the tests would be carried out at the Walton Centre.

Dawn Porter

At the end of my initial consultation we were introduced to Dawn Porter. Dawn is the Myasthenia Gravis Support nurse. We had a long chat during which she made sure we had contact with MGA and all the information we needed.

She gave me a contact telephone number to reach her. Dawn either answers questions herself or refers to your doctor. She has even rung me on occasion to say, ”Haven’t heard from you, is everything going well?” It is very reassuring to have this level of support available, providing a valued link.

I have an excellent, well-informed GP but was told that if he needed to make contact a neurologist is on 24 hour duty who would be able to offer advice. A real feeling of partnership was unfolding.

Ring binders and notice boards in the waiting area provide information about the Walton and contact numbers for care and support. The café buzzes at times with students comparing notes on their day’s work. As I later returned for my tests I was struck by the cheerfulness of the staff who asked on the corridors if I needed help to find my way. Emerging from an hour of EMG/SFEMG testing I was immediately asked if I would like a cup of tea. When it arrived it was a huge, welcome mugful! Perfect.

It is all too easy to neglect the psychological effects of a chronic ‘invisible’ illness. The excellent quality of medical care, understanding and support I have received at the Walton has made a tremendous difference to me. I feel as though the impact of MG on my life in general is given consideration and not just the medical symptoms. Even when some bits of me aren’t working too well it’s good to be treated as a whole person!
