Here is my suggestion for an easy way to take the medication for MG if swallowing tablets is a difficulty - as they were with me.
I have been diagnosed as having MG and my difficulty was the medication as I cannot swallow the tablets of Pyridostigmine and they do not make soluble ones like the tablets I take for Osteo-arthritis. When I was talking to Jacky at the MG Association she said that there were several members who had the same difficulty. A young woman who works in the Pharmacy Unit at the hospital I attend, has come up with a marvellous solution and I can now take my tablets easily and tastefully. So if there are members who would like to share this with me, I am writing out what she is doing for me in her own words.
"The tablets were ground to a fine powder using a mortar and pestle. This was then mixed with a thick liquid called 'Standard suspending base' and made up to the required volume. Once made up, the suspension only lasts for four weeks. This needs to be made in a Pharmacy or Dispensary so that the correct amounts of ingredients can be calculated. The formula can be obtained by doctors or pharmacists from the Pharmacy Department of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital or James Paget Hospital, Great Yarmouth."
I would like to finish by thanking the MGA for all the help I have received, by word of mouth and the various items of literature I have been given.
