From Strength to Strength
Rebecca Sotherton
I regularly receive a copy of the MGA newsletter, and being a fellow
Myasthenic enjoy reading of what people can achieve.
I was diagnosed in October 1995, and suffered all the usual symptoms
of weakness etc.
In
January 1996 I had a thymectomy, followed by a plasma exchange and then
a course of immuno globulin. All in all I was pretty fed up with hospitals
and I didn't seem to be improving fast enough for me. I wanted my independence
and confidence back, so after my medical year out I enrolled in my local
college to resit the exams I had failed twice due to lack of concentration.
My year started with many days off due to complete tiredness and hospital
day visits to London, eventually my body adjusted and the days didn't seem
so long, the college was supportive and organised my work around me. I
am happy to say the work and support paid off as I passed my exams.
My one main ambition when I was diagnosed was to go back to Snowdonia
and climb Mount Snowdon again. I've always loved walking and hiking and
found it very difficult to come to terms with the fact that I could no
longer climb the stairs at home without help. Well my medication became
as stable as it had ever been and I started walking small distances to
build up my confidence. Soon I realised that North Wales might not be just
a dream any more and so with a lot of faith, booked a holiday for August
97 in the mountains. I set off from the Snowdon Ranger path with my Dad,
sisters and friends. It took me a while but I am ecstatic to report I climbed
the 3560 ft to the summit of Snowdon. I hope this letter encourages other
Myasthenics, and helps them see there is a light at the end of what sometimes
seems a very dark tunnel.
